The Pew Charitable Trusts
The Pew Charitable Trusts initiated Sea Around Us in 1999 to develop a detailed global database to assess fishing’s impact on the oceans. While the collaboration concluded in December 2014, we continue to work with Pew to advance the use of catch reconstruction.
Fisheries Economics Research Unit
Long-standing collaboration with the Fisheries Economics Research Unit on all aspects related to fisheries economics. Explore Sea Around Us and FERU collaborations on the Fisheries Economics page.
Changing Ocean Research Unit
CORU studies the effects of global climate change on marine ecosystems, biodiversity and fisheries, and identifies mitigation and adaptation options. Explore effects of climate change on biodiversity and fisheries.
The MAVA Foundation
The MAVA Foundation supports our work in West Africa, and has a dedicated interest in engaging in strong partnerships to conserve biodiversity for future generations.
NEREUS
The Nereus program developed an international research network able to evaluate future scenarios for managing fisheries in the world’s oceans.
Collaborations
See more projects from Sea around Us on our Projects page.
National Geographic
National Geographic supported the Sea Around Us through a common interest in quantifying and illustrating the impact of fisheries on marine ecosystems. We chose the “seafoodprint” of fisheries as a measure of this impact. Read the SeafoodPrint report.
Convention on Biological Diversity
CBD identified indicators to monitor biodiversity loss, and chose the ‘Marine Trophic Index’ (MTI) as one of these indicators. This collaboration developed and presents this indicator by country and LME.
Baltic 2020
We contributed to the work of the Baltic Sea 2020 Foundation (Sweden) by reconstructing total catch time series for all Baltic Sea countries back to 1950.
Global Aquaculture Performance Index
The Global Aquaculture Performance Index (GAPI) developed by the Seafood Ecology Research Group at the University of Victoria, Canada, uses a statistical approach to evaluate the environmental performance of marine aquaculture.
Oceana
Oceana supported a conference held in Belize in 2011 aimed at disseminating and repatriating crucial information on the marine biodiversity and fisheries of Belize and what the people of Belize were at risk to lose due to proposed oil exploration in their waters.
